Classroom Updates!
Welcome Winter! Please remember to send your child with hat, gloves, heavy jackets, etc.
Reading Workshop:
In reading students are learning the different features between poems and plays (dramas), and stories (prose). They discovered that poems, plays, and prose have visible and easily identifiable features. A poem describes feelings and ideas. It has verses, stanzas, and sometimes rhyming words. A play tells a story through dialogue and actions performed by actors. It has mostly dialogue, stage directions, and descriptions (setting, look of the characters). Finally, a prose (story, novel) tells a story through a narrator who describes events. It has paragraphs, dialogue (usually in quotation marks), and chapters. Students compared and contrasted several poems, plays, and stories, before taking a mini-summative on Tuesday. This will come home in next week’s weekly folder. Students are loving reader’s theater. They are doing a great job reading fluently and with expression!
Students are continuing to read their Time for Kids magazines. They enjoy reading non-fiction text about current events. Now that we are in second quarter, student will be graded on the bonus section of their Time for Kids quiz. Each week they can receive up to 5 points for the short answer question on their quiz. Students are required to write a 5 star response and use evidence from the text to support their answer. I shared several examples in class of what a 5 STAR RESPONSE looks like.
